Nuclear Waste

Assembly Bill 555 (AB555) will allow nuclear waste in Wisconsin. This bill will be voted on by Wisconsin State Legislature on Feb. 10th, 2004. To clarify things, AB555 will allow nuclear plants to run, and allow them to waste on the lands where we previously had been clearing waste. If AB555 is passed, the Wolf River Batholith will become a high power nuclear waste repository. This bill banishes the 20-year-old statutes, which require that two things be met before allowing nuclear power in the state. The two conditions are 1) a high level waste repository must be in operation, and 2) that nuclear power must be advantageous to the ratepayer. AB 555 would remove the above clear, sensible guidelines, which protect the public good.
